Homage to Japanese pioneering artist Yayoi Kusama, queen of the polka-dot. The off-kilter registration from dabu (mud resist) dots and printed black boxes makes the Kusama one of our favorite indigo prints to date.
Variation in printing and color are hallmarks of hand block printing with natural dyes.
Block Shop is a textile company that marries the traditional Indian hand block printing process with a modern California aesthetic. Their products are a collaboration between sisters Hopie and Lily Stockman in Los Angeles and a family of printers and dyers in Rajasthan. Their entire process is manual: they design on paper, print with wooden blocks, and dye in small batches – the same way it’s been done in India for more than three centuries. No two textiles are exactly alike.
